The seminar might be over, but the learning continues! On this page we list all the materials we reference in our seminars, as well as other tools we have found useful in our own poker careers.
Books
- No Limits: the Fundamentals of No-Limit Holdem – The book by Pro Poker Seminars founders Chris “Fox” Wallace and Adam Stemple. This book will give you a much deeper understanding of holdem in general and cash games in particular, and make you one of the most dangerous players in the cardroom.
- The Psychology of Poker
and Your Worst Poker Enemy
and everything else by Dr. Alan Schoonmaker
— Essential reading for understanding and adjusting your mental makeup for optimal poker performance by the third full-time instructor at Pro Poker Seminars.
- Read ‘Em and Reap
by Joe Navarro
— We’ve been doing a lot of seminars on transitioning to live play lately, and a good reader of tells can be a huge advantage live. Navarro’s book is an excellent primer on live tells and reading an opponent’s body language. Highly recommended for all types of live games.
- Hold’em Excellence
and More Hold’em Excellence
by Lou Krieger — Two great primers on fixed-limit holdem and beating the “no foldem holdem” games you find in many card rooms. If the flop is sometimes six ways, these books will help you learn how to get an edge over all those weak opponents.
- Small Stakes Hold ‘em
by Ed Miller,Mason Malmuth
and David Sklansky
— Once you finish with Krieger’s books, this will take you to the next level. Considered by many to be the bible of fixed-limit Holdem games.
- Pot-Limit Omaha Poker
and Advanced Pot-Limit Omaha: Small Ball and Short-Handed Play
by Jeff Hwang— Adam always tries to sneak in a workshop or two concentrating on alternate games. And when he talks Pot-Limit Omaha, these are the books he mentions.
Software
- Holdem Manager & PokerTracker – If you’re playing online, then you need tracking software. These are the two tracking software giants, and both will help you understand your own game as well as displaying a HUD (Heads Up Display)of your opponent’s stats while you play. Preference between the two is largely a matter of taste, and they both offer a free trail, so download them both and see which you prefer.
- Leak Buster – This add-on software for Holdem Manager will help you find your mistakes and eliminate those expensive leaks from your game. Most players find that with 20,000 hands in a Holdem Manager database, Leak Buster can pick out a large number of leaks and help them increase their win rate significantly. A very useful tool, and one that should pay for itself very quickly for a serious online player.
- Ace Poker Drills – Excellent software that helps you to calculate equity in any hand. A fine resource for beginning players looking to get serious about the game and start focusing on equity and expected value.
Places for US players to play online
The Cake Network – This is a large network of smaller sites. Games on Cake tend to play more like live games, because there is no tracking software allowed and all the ultra-tight 12 table grinders stay away. You must be able to watch your opponents, concentrate on a few tables, and take notes to beat these games. If you can do that, you will find that the players are much softer, the action much better, and the profits can be great.
The Merge Network - The Merge network, which includes sites like Carbon Poker and Lock Poker is the largest US facing site at the time of this writing, and traffic is growing fast. Tracking software is allowed, and the software is slick. Lock Poker currently offers the largest bonus and the highest rakeback percentage, so it gets the nod on the Merge network. Here’s a link for the max bonus and rakeback percentage: Lock Poker Download
Most of the other online poker sites that allow US players are not big enough or safe enough to bother with.
